Lumm said the county's website at has a checklist of what residents should get to prepare for the storm. Homeowners are encouraged to go to places like Home Depot to get sand bags for when sand becomes available and have it throughout the hurricane season. Lumm said it makes his job a lot easier when the commissioners can tell residents what is happening instead of referring all of the calls to him. He said two county commissioners called him to get the status of the storm and what they should be telling residents in their area when they call them. Lumm also said county officials have been proactive when it comes to the hurricane. Being that it is a holiday weekend, Lumm said they don't want to cause panic among people who live in Bay County or who are visiting. The difficult part of preparing for this hurricane, besides not knowing where it's headed, is the messaging from the county. He said the county would start setting up shelters 72 hours in advance of an expected impact and then open shelters 48 hours out. Lumm said he has been in contact with Bay District Schools about opening schools as shelters for the possibility of the hurricane to hit the area. He said there have been a lot of new residents who have moved into the area after Hurricane Michael and don't know what they should do. Lumm also said he has been and is continuing to meet with new residents in Bay County about what they need to do to prepare.
